Coaching Achievements
David Schwarz, the head coach for men at Brown University for the past 4 years, was named the head Athenas tennis coach on July 3, 2014, in an announcement made by CMS Director of Athletics, Mike Sutton. While at Brown, Schwarz coached the team against tough Ivy League and other Division I competition to 58 wins in 93 matches (.624).
Prior to his tenure at Brown, Schwarz had been the most successful tennis coach in the history of Middlebury College men. Schwarz headed the team for 10 seasons with an overall record of 174-37 (.825), while leading the Panthers to national prominence. Under Schwarz guidance, Middlebury won four straight NESCAC titles (2004-2007), winning its fifth and sixth titles in the past seven years in 2009 and 2010. His team made eight straight trips to the NCAA final four, with the 2004 squad capturing the first NCAA Tennis Championship for the school. His 2006 and 2007 teams set school records with 22 wins at the time, a mark that was eclipsed in 2010 when the Panthers earned a 23-2 mark en route to their second NCAA Tennis Championship. The ITA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2004, Schwarz was named NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2010, and earned ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and 2010.
A 1989 graduate of Cornell, where he played four years of varsity tennis, Schwarz began his collegiate coaching career in the fall of 1996 as the Assistant Tennis Coach for men and women at Cornell. Following one year in that role, Schwarz was the Assistant Coach for men (1997-2000), spending the 1998-99 season as an assistant with the women as well. The Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000, Schwarz was also the Managing Director of the Cornell Tennis & Squash Center. Born in Providence, Schwarz grew up in Ithaca where his father Daniel is a Professor of English at Cornell.
