Haley Fournier of Leawood, Kan., is a two-sport athlete who has signed a letter of intent with the Texas Tech University Red Raiders.
Fournier, who will graduate from Blue Valley North High School this spring, has been a key member of four Kansas Class 6A girls championship teams - in both tennis and soccer. For the record, Fournier signed the letter of intent with Texas Tech in tennis. But she still loves both sports - and she hopes to walk on to the Tech soccer team.
"My goal, or dream, has always been to play both sports in college," Fournier said. "But, since tennis is offering me a full scholarship, and is allowing me the opportunity to try and play soccer in the fall, I can't be selfish about it. It would make no sense to continue to play soccer at the expense of the tennis team if I am not considered an important or impact player."
Fournier and the Mustangs won state tennis team titles in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Blue Valley North was state runner-up in 2008. The soccer team captured the Kansas crown in 2007 and placed third in 2008.
Individually, Fournier has been very impressive in Mustang tennis.
The 5-foot-7 right-hander won two doubles championships (2006 and 2007), and one singles title (2009). Fournier earned third place in the 2008 state singles tournament.
All told, that runs Fournier's talley to seven team or individual state championships, one second-place finish, and two third-place finishes.
Fournier's tennis performance earned her recognition as the Kansas City Star's Girls Tennis Player of the Year in 2009.
