Commitment Comments Countdown: Metzger Chooses the Ducks by
Gregg Jones, 22 October 2008
Five-star recruit Julia Metzger had her eye on the Pacific-10 Conference when she started hunting for a college tennis home last year.
So when
Oregon Coach Paul Reber recently phoned with a scholarship offer, the 17-year-old from the shores of Lake Erie didn't have to think long.
"I chose Oregon, first, for the great Pac-10 competition," said Metzger, a senior from Perrysburg, Ohio, a suburb of Toledo. "Also, the coach and assistant coach are very excited about the program and improving their players."
Metzger made her verbal commitment to the Ducks without ever setting foot on the Oregon campus. She plans to make an official visit in early November, just before signing a national letter of intent to attend Oregon next August.
The signing will conclude her year-long college search, and eventually lead her to the West Coast for the next chapter of her tennis career.
"In the beginning of my junior year, I started looking at schools," Metzger recalled. "I was definitely looking at Pac-10 schools because of how tough the competition is."
