Peach State Roundup
by Julie Wrege, 30 May 2007
The weather in "Hot-lanta" was warm and dry for the long Memorial Day weekend - great for tennis but not for the prolonged drought which exists there. Smoke from the South Georgia wildfires reached several hundred miles north to metro-Atlanta for most of the weekend.
Peach State Tournament Director Sean Ferreira was extremely happy to draw players from more than half the US states - especially those from California, Arizona, Nevada and Washington.
"With the Roxy and Quiksilver out west going on over this same weekend, we do not usually draw kids from the western states. And we could not have asked for better weather for this year's tournament."
The Peach State returned for the second year to the Racquet Club of the South and several other clubs on the north side of Atlanta. This tournament has become the signature event in the South and a premier USTA National Event. It has been awarded Georgia Tennis Association's Junior Tournament of the Year three times (1998, 2000, 2006) - and the 2006 Southern Tournament of the Year.
