Angie Zhou planned to talk to students on campus about their experiences before making her final college decision. But Zhou had to make alternative plans once all visits were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The four-star rising senior from Ann Arbor, Michigan did most of her research online about the programs offered at each school. Then, she arranged calls with players on the tennis teams and students at the schools she was interested in attending.

Zhou noticed a different tone once she began speaking with everyone at Pomona-Pitzer in Southern California.

"All the students I talked with seemed really passionate and really eager to help me out. They all seemed to really love it and made it sound like such a nice environment to go to,” Zhou said. “The location is also great because I really wanted to go somewhere far and explore something new. Even though it's kind of scary, it's also really exciting."

Zhou committed to Pomona-Pitzer last month. She was mainly looking at Division III universities and smaller liberal arts schools with strong academic credentials. The 4.0 student scored a perfect 36 on her ACT in English and Reading, 35 in Math and Science and received a 1570 on her SAT.

"I wanted a good balance between academics and athletics because my studies are really important to me and I think at a Division III you definitely have liberty with the major you choose and the classes you take,” Zhou said. “I really wanted the best education and a place I can improve my tennis game."
