Spring Signing Week '13: Jarryd Woog Stays Home

Every tennis player is taught that hard work will be rewarded. When Jarryd Woog was 16, he took some time off to decide if he still believed that.
"In the 16s, I was just really struggling with my game, figuring out how I wanted to play, really confused, playing bad," Woog said. "I ended up taking two breaks from tennis for a month at a time to figure out what I wanted to do. After that second break, I realized that tennis is just something that I really want to do and pursue. I got in that mindset again. This is what I love."
Woog, who will sign today with the University of Memphis, reestablished himself as a Top 10 player in the South after those months of soul searching.
It started in November of 2011, when he won the Fall Southern Closed in Louisville. Woog defeated No. 1 seed Alex Gornet (who had just signed with Louisville), No. 2 Elliott Orkin (currently committed to Florida) and No. 3 Harrison Kennedy (now a freshman at LSU), all in straight sets. Woog was unseeded.
Woog followed that in December with a runner-up finish at the Winter Southern Closed in Knoxville. His best win came in beating Zack Lewis, now a freshman at College of Charleston. The strong finish helped earned Woog the award as most improved boys player in Tennessee.
"That was really big turning point for me," Woog said. "It gave me a lot of confidence. I was playing my best tennis."
