One week after the Barry men captured the title, the Barry women joined the party. The top-seeded Bucs defeated No. 3 Central Oklahoma 4-0 on Monday in the final at the Edmond Center Court in Oklahoma.

The indoor national championship was the second in program history, following Barry’s initial title in 2020.

“It was a great atmosphere. The energy was through the roof. I am so proud of the girls,” Barry head coach Avi Kigel said. “They handled adversity with playing away indoor against a team that’s in their facility. They are used to it, and we really played well and came through with the win. I am so proud. It is a big accomplishment for us and (I’m) looking forward to so much more from this team.”

The start of the tournament was pushed back a day because of icy weather in the area. The Bucs swept all their matches in Oklahoma, defeating No. 9 Flagler 4-0 in the quarterfinals and No. 6 West Alabama 4-0 in semifinals.

The final score against Central Oklahoma (6-1) was a bit deceiving as the teams battled in doubles and the singles matches still on the court when the title was clinched were close.

Barry (8-0) won the doubles point behind a 6-4 victory from Deniz Khazan and Madeline Bosnjak at No. 1 and a 7-5 victory from Jil Engelmann and Helene Scholsen at No. 2.

Bosnjak and Khazan made quick work of their opponents in singles for the Bucs. Top-ranked Khazan beat No. 2 Mae Canete 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot and Bosnjak defeated Tizia Brocks 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.

Scholsen clinched the title for Barry at the No. 4 spot with a 7-6(2), 6-0 win over No. 21 Grace Chadick.

“It was super tough. We were a match point down in the doubles and we somehow managed to save it. I think that was the most important moment of the match today,” Scholsen said. “Then, yeah, I am happy I could also clinch in singles and (Madeline) and Deniz did a quick job and that is amazing.”
