We talked to a few of these top performers:

Jordyn Kuo (Orange, California)

Four-star junior Jordyn Kuo won two Girls 18s L4 singles titles in August and finished with a perfect 6-0 record.

The 5-foot-6 right-hander captured the top slots at the ITA Idaho State Open in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and the El Paso Open in El Paso, Texas. As a result of her success, Kuo rose from a TennisRecruiting.net ranking of No. 220 to a personal-TRN best 199.

However, Kuo had experienced some doubts about her tennis ability and her passion for the game.

“Just weeks before these results I had been struggling with my game,” she said. “I wasn’t doing very well in tournaments and had almost fallen out of love with the sport. I put too much pressure on myself to perform well. Because of this, I decided to take two weeks off in July.”

A well-rested Kuo then turned to one of her coaches, Thales Castro, of the FC Elite Academy at the Racquet Club of Irvine in Irvine, California.

“When I came back, I was excited and ready to play again,” Kuo said. “Thales Castro helped me through this time and showed me tennis is not about the result – it’s about the journey and experience you gain from it. He reminded me of the happiness and fun I had on the court, and with his help, I was able to find it again. I think my wins were due to my renewed passion for tennis and the desire to play again.”

Kuo is also coached by Robert Chu of FC Elite Academy, and by Miklos Hornok, a private coach in Irvine. She said she is working with her coaches on moving forward and creating more opportunities to be aggressive. Kuo hopes this strategy will “add more dimensions” to her game.

Kuo is captain of her Villa Park High School tennis team, which captured the California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division III championship last May. It marked the first girls tennis title for the Spartans since the 1995 season.

A member of the National Honor Society and the school’s honor roll, Kuo is active in campus and community activities. She is the commissioner of her class special events program, and has served as treasurer and community relations director. Kuo is a member of the National Charity League and has held positions of president and vice president of the organization.

She is a volunteer director and coach at Serving Advantage, a youth-run non-profit organization which teaches tennis to children with special needs. Kuo is in charge of communication, organization, recruitment and development of the high school volunteers. As a coach, Kuo organizes and runs the clinics and camps.

“I enjoy public service because it gives me the ability to make an impact on other people’s lives,” Kuo said. “There is nothing more rewarding than serving my community, and I plan to continue my passion for philanthropy in college and beyond.”

Kuo has been researching colleges for years. She would like to attend a school with strong academics and job and internship opportunities, along with having a solid tennis team.

The versatile Kuo was a gifted violinist at an early age and assumed she would become a musician. That all changed when Hornok, originally from Hungary, invited Kuo and her brother to train at an academy in Budapest. When she returned to the U.S., Kuo began her tennis quest in earnest.

Her parents, Tobey and Roger Kuo, believe their daughter is totally focused on the tennis court.

“Jordyn has always been in ‘her own head.’ Being on the court allows her to block out all the ‘noise’ and focus on a little yellow ball,” they said. “She also does not like to rely on others for the outcomes. Jordyn is very kind and smiley. Her high school coach says she makes a new friend with almost every match she plays.”
