USTA Cancels More Events, NCAA Waives Standardized Tests
Share:

Due to the continuing health and safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the USTA has canceled all National junior events through Oct. 12 and is encouraging players to participate in local events that do not require extensive travel.

The decision by the USTA on Monday was made to help limit the interstate travel required for national tournaments. Varying locations around the country are subject to different health regulations, restrictions and quarantine periods.

Junior players will now be able to earn national rankings points at selected Section-level events in the 17 USTA sections.

The National junior events canceled following the recent announcement include:

September

National Level 3 (Sept. 12-14)

Zimmerman/Johnson National Level 2 (Sept. 18-20)

McKinney Texas Grade 5 ITF (Sept. 19-26)

Corpus Christi Grade 4 ITF (Sept. 26-Oct. 3)

Pan American Grade B1 ITF (Oct. 3-10)

October

National Level 2 (Oct. 10-12)

Allstate Sugar Bowl Level 3 (Nov. 14-16)

Also on Monday, the NCAA Eligibility Center announced that Division I and II recruits enrolling during the 2021-22 academic year will not be required to take a standardized test such as the SAT or ACT to meet eligibility requirements. The ability for students to take standardized tests has been greatly inhibited by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Rather than taking the test, Division I athletes will be asked to maintain a 2.3 GPA throughout the 2021-22 academic year in the NCAA-approved courses. Division II athletes will need to carry a 2.2 GPA in the same group of classes.

The changes will not apply to high school students graduating after the spring or summer of 2020.

"We are keenly aware of the educational disruptions and academic uncertainty that prospective student-athletes are experiencing," Felicia Martin, vice president of the NCAA Eligibility Center, said in a statement. "To that end, the Eligibility Center is committed to providing support and flexibility in application of initial-eligibility requirements as we remain nimble for additional issues we can't predict or forecast."

All the information can be found at the NCAA Eligibility Center COVID-19 Response FAQs.
