Eric Johnson was only 3 1/2 years old when he wandered into his family's garage and discovered an old tennis racket.
He began hitting balls against a wall, and realized how much he enjoyed the process.
Once he was old enough to participate in tournaments, the San Jose, Calif., native got a big thrill from driving around to tournaments and playing in national events.
But it wasn't until Johnson was 13 that he decided he wanted to play for one of the top college programs in the country.
Johnson has achieved that goal by verbally committing to play for the two-time defending NCAA champion University of Southern California men's team.
Johnson, who trains with Nick Fustar and traveling coach Ogidi Obi at Eagle Fustar Academy, made his decision just last week. He called USC head coach Peter Smith to give him the news.
"To play for the No. 1 team is a dream come true," Johnson said by phone from Canada, where he is playing in an ITF event. "Looking back, I would have never imagined myself getting to this point. I was just really always playing for fun."
