Anisimova, Wu Claim Historic U.S. Open Junior Titles
Share:

The 2017 U.S. Open Junior Championships ended with a collective first and an individual first for both the United States and China.

Amanda Anisimova defeated Coco Gauff 6-0, 6-2 in the third consecutive girls slam final to feature two Americans, with the U.S. having three different junior slam girls winners in the same year for the first time ever, just two years after U.S. boys accomplished that. Wu Yibing defeated Axel Geller of Argentina 6-4, 6-4 to become the first junior from China to win a slam singles title just hours after he had also captured the doubles championship.

No. 4 seed Anisimova moved through the draw without dropping a set and facing only one seed, No. 8 Olga Danilovic of Serbia, whom she beat 7-5, 6-1 after trailing 5-1 in the opening set. The 16-year-old from Florida then breezed past Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals to reach her second junior slam final, with the first coming at the 2016 French Open, when she was just 14.

Gauff, a 13-year-old wild card playing in her first junior slam main draw, also beat just one seed en route to the final, taking out No. 5 Carson Branstine of Canada 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Top seed Whitney Osuigwe, the 2017 French girls champion, was upset in the second round, and the other girls slam champion in the field, No. 2 seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, this year’s Australian Open winner, also lost in the second round, to UCLA recruit Elysia Bolton.
