The gold balls are strategically placed in Katie Volynet's bedroom at her home in Walnut Creek, Calif. The rising sophomore blue chip wants them in her sightline when she gets up each morning.
“They motivate me when I look at them. They remind me that hard work pays off,” Volynets said. “Looking at them inspires me to keep working hard to get more.”
Girls 18 Champion Katie Volynets
Volynets is rearranging her collection this week to make room for another gold ball after capturing the USTA National Girls 18 Clay Court singles title last Sunday at The Racquet Club of Memphis in Tennessee.
The 13th-seeded Volynets defeated No. 2 Abigail Forbes (Raleigh, N.C.) 6-2, 6-2 in the final to win her third national singles title. Volynets won hardcourt titles in the Girls 12s in 2014 and Girls 14s in 2015.
