2010 Fall: Vixen Tennis Wins Top Two Singles Flights at ODAC Fall Tournament
The Sweet Briar Tennis Vixens completed their 2010 Fall Season today with some impressive performances in both singles and doubles competition in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Fall Individual Tournament held at Hollins University.
Sunday's action started with the singles finals for Flight A and B singles. Both top court players Ariel Holness ('14/Springfield, Va.) and sophomore Moriah Burke, were second seeds in their respective flights behind players from nationally ranked (#9) Washington & Lee University (WLU). Both players took the courts at 9 am, side by side.
Sweet Briar's first-year player Ariel Holness (Springfield, Va.) defeated #1 seed Jen Snyder from Washington & Lee in an upset victory. Play was competitive to say the least. Both Snyder and Holness played aggressively, each occasionally attacking the net to close out points. A variety of spins, power and consistency benefited Holness who won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 for her first ODAC singles championship.
While Sweet Briar teammates and Holness were enjoying the Flight 1 victory, Burke (pictured left) was on the next court, battling for her win against WLU's Chelsea Mixon. Burke lost the first set, 6-2, was up 4-1 in the second before Mixon marched back to regain the lost service breaks to get back on-serve. Burke maintained control to go to 5-5, served to get a 6-5 lead, and then broke Mixon to take the set 7-5. A match tie-breaker to 10 points was played in lieu of a third set throughout the tournament. Burke gained confidence with each earned point and her team cheering behind her. Burke won the tie-break 10-6 for the tournament victory.
In other Vixen tennis action, Julia Green ('13/Vancouver, Wash.) and first-year player Grace Caskey (Warwick, N.Y.) competed in the consolation rounds of their respective draws. In Flight F, Green advanced and won the consolation finals.
Caskey played in her first conference outing but lost in the consolation semi-final round. Immediately following the singles, the Green and Caskey took to the courts as doubles partners in the second doubles flight. Having lost their first round on Saturday, they advanced in the consolation finals to claim a victory.
