The U.S. Open main draws once again showed what the country could offer from the college and junior tennis worlds. This was especially true in doubles events, which was filled with former college players.

University of Virginia grads Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot became the first pair of former teammates other than the Bryans to make it into the U.S. Open quarterfinals in the last seven years. Even though their run ended there, they made quite a showing - especially since they aren't twins.

Huey also teamed with former California player Raquel Kops-Jones for a win in the round of Mixed Doubles. It was not the only win for Kops-Jones. She and Abigail Spears, who played for UCLA, also won in Women's Doubles before they came up against the Williams sisters.

It was not the end of the road for Spears as she and partner Santiago Gonzalez went all the way to the finals in the Mixed. The unseeded duo lost to Andrea Hlavackova and Max Mirnyi, 7-6,6-3.

One of the most interesting doubles matches on the court carried a lot of nostalgia. Rajeev Ram and Brian Baker had played doubles together in the juniors, with a title at the Easter Bowl and a final at Wimbledon. They then played together for a little while on the professional circuit before Baker took an extended break due to injuries.

The team of Baker and Ram was back on the court at the U.S. Open and ironically ran into a hot junior team - 2013 Kalamazoo winners Paul Oosterbaan and Ronnie Schneider - their first time up. Despite the talent of the youngsters, it was clear who had an extra dozen years of experience.

Despite the fact that they were both at the very top of doubles in college and had continued with good results on the tour, Megan Moulton-Levy (William & Mary) and Eric Butorac (Gustavus Adolphus) ran into some tough luck at the Open this year.

Moulton-Levy and partner Katalin Marosi lost in round one in a close match to Irina-Camelia Begu and Klara Zakopalova, while Butorac and Frederik Nielsen lost to top-seeded Bob and Mike Bryan in round two. When they teamed together for mixed doubles, Moulton-Levy and Butorac fell in a match tiebreaker to sixth-seeded Lisa Raymond (Florida) and partner Jean-Julien Rojer who went to UCLA.
