Kirsten Woods was very familiar with the head coach at Virginia Tech. She watched Woods train at Virginia Tech’s facility. She’s seen Woods play at tournaments.
The coach just happens to be Woods’ mom, Terry Ann Zawacki-Holdren. The former Wake Forest star has led the Hokies for more than two decades.

Although Woods explored other options for college, the five-star senior realized committing to Virginia Tech was the best move.
“My mom knows my potential and how I can take off in college. I really thought I would be in the best hands with her,” Woods said. “I was thinking about getting out of town for a while, but when I was really looking at other schools nothing came close. I found myself comparing them to Virginia Tech.”
Zawacki-Holdren isn’t the only tennis coach at Virginia Tech with a child who will be on the roster. Frank Thompson is a rising redshirt senior on the men’s team coached by his father Jim Thompson.
