Amelia Honer suffered an uncommon early exit in doubles at the Girls 18 USTA National Clay Court Championships. Honer and partner, Aubrey Nisbet, usually have more extended runs in tournament play.

But the initial disappointment had a silver lining that led to gold.

Able to conserve her energy for singles, the ninth-seeded Honer remained in the draw until the very end. The Newtown, Pennsylvania native captured her first gold ball after beating No. 8 Ariana Pursoo of Westbury, New York 6-4, 6-0 in the final at the LTP-Tennis Club in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

“I am super excited. It’s a lot of hard work paying off,” said Honer, a five-star recent graduate of Council Rock High School North. “I came into the tournament without many expectations. I just wanted to take it match by match, and before I knew it, I was in the finals.”
