With major International Tennis Federation junior tournaments returning in North and South America, many young players were able to improve their junior rankings last month, while several other teenagers and a trio of former college players picked up titles on the ITF’s men’s and women’s World Tennis Tour. Look for all eight of the Easter Bowl champions in April’s edition of the Aces.
Daniel Rincon
The 18-year-old from Spain won back-to-back Grade 2 titles in his home country last month, moving into the ITF Junior Circuit Top 20 for the first time. Seeded sixth, Rincon, the 2019 16s Orange Bowl champion, defeated compatriot Miguel Perez Pena 6-0, 6-4 in the first final. Unseeded the following week, Rincon then extended his winning streak to 10 matches, beating another compatriot, unseeded Daniel Merida Aguilar, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 in the final.
Juncheng Shang
The 16-year-old from China capped a successful ITF Junior Circuit South American swing with a title at the Grade A Banana Bowl in Brazil. The second-seeded Shang, who lives and trains in the United States, defeated qualifier Miguel Gomes of Portugal 6-2, 7-6(4) in the final of the year’s first Grade A tournament. Shang, who is at a career-high of 4 in the ITF rankings, then received a wild card into the Miami Open qualifying, taking ATP No. 157 Liam Broady of Great Britain to a third-set tiebreaker before bowing out.
