With national team indoor titles in the United States, pro doubles titles in Australia and Asia, junior titles in South America and Challenger titles in Europe and South Africa for up-and-coming Americans, February was a short but productive month for current and former collegians and many elite junior competitors.
Polina Kudermetova
The 17-year-old from Russia captured her second career ITF World Tennis Tour title last month at a $15,000 tournament in Turkey, winning four consecutive three-set matches for the title. Using an ITF Junior Reserve designation for entry, the junior No. 4 defeated just one seed and three qualifiers in that stretch, including the final, a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 decision over 19-year-old qualifier Marta Custic of Spain. Kudermetova, the younger sister of WTA Top 40 player Veronika, is now up to 657 in the WTA rankings.
Oksana Selekhmeteva
Another ITF Top 10 Russian junior had professional success last month, with the 18-year-old left-hander picking up her first ITF World Tennis Tour singles title at the $15,000 tournament in Spain. The unseeded Selekhmeteva, also using the Junior Reserve entry method, defeated No. 7 seed Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-2 in the final for her fifth consecutive straight-sets win of the week. The 2019 U.S. Open girls doubles champion now has five WTT pro titles, all won in Spain, with the first four coming in doubles.
