Nejla Zukic knew it would have been the safe choice to stay in state and try to play at the University of Louisville. The four-star star senior from Louisville, Kentucky attends high school on the Louisville campus, so the transition would have been seamless.
But Zukic realized being comfortable may hinder her growth as a person.

"I did feel like I needed to kind of get a fresh start and learn to do things by myself without always calling mom or dad and asking them to help,” she said. “College is a great way to gain some independence in a way I guess."
Zukic began searching for the next best thing, and believes she found it at Western Michigan University. Zukic saved the last of her five campus visits for WMU in October. She signed with the Broncos during the start of the signing period last month.
"There was never that feeling of I am home and I never felt that connection with a campus until I went to Western Michigan,” Zukic said. “The hardest part was thinking about leaving my family and friends. But I felt like this was the best thing for me. It's kind of like restarting my life almost."
