August is one of the most important months of the year for young tennis players, whether they are competing internationally, in the USTA Nationals or at the U.S. Open. Due to the Tennis Recruiting Network’s thorough coverage of the this month USTA National Championships, they are not included below, but congratulations again to Katie Volynets, Zachary Svajda, Reese Brantmeier, Alex Bernard, Theadora Rabman, Cooper Williams, Claire An and Max Exsted for their titles.
USA’s Boys ITF World Junior Tennis team
For the second consecutive year, the United States claimed the boys title at the International Tennis Federation’s 14-and-under team championships in the Czech Republic. Nishesh Basavareddy, Kyle Kang and Dylan Charlap, seeded No. 2 among the 16 teams, fell behind No. 5 seed France 1-0 in the final, but came back to win 2-1, with Basavareddy taking the point at No. 2 singles and teaming with Kang to clinch the championship in the deciding doubles match. Basavareddy, the 2019 14s Clay Court champion, went 11-0 in the six rubbers his team contested. The U.S. is the first country to win back-to-back boys titles since American teams did it in 2002-03. A wild card into the WTA International event in Washington D.C. led to a first WTA title for the 17-year-old McNally and the 15-year-old Gauff. The reigning U.S. Open girls doubles champions didn’t come close to dropping a set in their four victories, beating No. 3 seeds Anna Kalinskaya of Russia and Miyu Kato of Japan 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals and No. 4 seeds Maria Sanchez of the United States and Fanny Stollar of Hungary 6-2, 6-2 in the final. Both Gauff and McNally have now moved into the Top 150 in the WTA doubles rankings.
