The third-seeded Exsted was down 1-5 and 15-40 in the first set of the final with No. 2 Abhinav Chunduru. Exsted continued plugging along and took a 6-5 lead in the first stanza. Chunduru fired up and forced a tiebreaker. Although he was down in the breaker, Exsted rallied and took the first set 7-6 (5). Exsted then breezed to a 6-0 second-set win to capture his first USTA singles gold ball.
“I was more aggressive and fought for every point,” said Exsted, who did not drop a singles set in the tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center. “I hit a lot of drop shots to keep him off the baseline (including the shot which gave him the title).”
