Ross Greenstein of Scholarship For Athletes talks with Brett Masi, head men's tennis coach at the University of San Diego. Masi gives advice to both players and parents about the college recruiting process, and he also comments on what he looks for in a potential recruit.
Questions and Answers
Scholarship For Athletes (SFA): What advice do you have for the parents of junior players about the recruiting process? Brett Masi (BM): Keep your children's focus on the tennis and development and not on where to go to college. If not then the pressure builds up in the player's head - and they can't perform at the level they are capable of.
SFA: What information should an athlete know prior to making their initial school list?
BM: Is this a school that I feel fits my personality? Do I want a big school or small school? Can I play at this level or on this team right away?
SFA: How important is it for potential recruits to build strong relationships with you and the players on your team?
BM: It's huge! The more you know about the coach and the team the easier it is when you make the transition to college. Also, the more a recruit communicates with me the better feeling I have on whether he wants to come to my school or not.
