Championship Week
Shang Powers Way to Boys 14s Title
Share:

Juncheng Shang may be mild-mannered, but put a tennis racket in his hand and the Chinese native turns into Superman, swatting forehand winners as easy as the man of steel clobbers arch-villains.

Shang, 13, who has already conquered the 12s division with national titles in last year’s Clay Court Championships and Eddie Herr International Championships, is now powering through the 14s after downing Nicholas Heng 6-3, 6-4 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Alabama to win the USTA National Hard Court Championships.

Shang, whose friends call him Jerry, moved from China to Naples two years ago and trains at the Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy. He rode the momentum of 14s’ titles at the DunoAir Windmill Cup and Amstelpark Zuiver Trophy, both staged in the Netherlands last month.

“It wasn’t a difficult [transition] because before I came to the U.S. I was in the International School, so my English was OK,’’ said Shang, a native of Beijing. “I miss Beijing, but the problem was there’s a lot of pollution so it’s bad to be back. I like Florida.’’
